Embassy of India to celebrate Sardar Patel’s Birth Anniversary as India’s National Unity Day

Known as the ‘Unifier of India’, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, was the first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of India. His commitment to national integration in the newly independent India was total and uncompromising, earning him the sobriquet “Iron Man of India.” He is also affectionately remembered as the “Patron saint of India’s civil servants” for having established the modern all India service system.Sardar Patel was a key player in the Constituent Assembly of India and was responsible in large measure for shaping India’s constitution. He was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 1991.

As a tribute tothe ‘Bismarck of India’, the Government of India has organized a week-long celebration, commencing from 31st October 2017to commemorate his 142nd Birth Anniversary, which has been designated as National Unity Day.


Embassy of India, Muscat is celebrating the 142nd Birth Anniversary by organizing a Seminar, Photo Exhibition and screening of a video on the life and times of Sardar Patel. The celebration will be held on Tuesday, 31st October 2017, at 1830 hours at the Embassy premises.


Furthermore, students from Indian Schools in Muscat will be participating in the celebration at the Embassy. Besides, various other Indian Schools in Oman have also planned to organize events to educate students about the life and times of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
