Advisory on Fraudulent Calls
The Embassy of India, Muscat has received information that some members of the Indian diaspora have received calls from unknown persons who appear to have knowledge of their passport, visa, immigration or other such matters. The callers may falsely claim that there is an issue with the individual's records and may offer to resolve the matter in return for payment of money.
- The Embassy of India, Muscat advises members of the Indian community in Oman to remain extremely vigilant as such calls may be part of an attempted fraud, impersonation or financial scam.
- Members of the Indian community are advised to keep the following into consideration:
- Do not share copies or photographs of your passport, Oman Resident Card, identity documents or other sensitive personal information with unknown persons.
- Do not make any payment to any person who calls claiming that money is required to resolve a passport, visa, immigration or other official matter.
- Do not rely solely on the telephone number displayed on your phone, as caller identification may be manipulated.
- Be particularly cautious if the caller creates a sense of urgency or threatens visa cancellation, deportation, legal action, arrest, loss of employment or other adverse consequences unless money is paid immediately.
- If a person claims to be calling on behalf of the Embassy of India, independently verify the matter through the official contact details published on the Embassy's website.
- If you have already transferred money or disclosed financial information, contact your bank/financial institution immediately and report the matter to the appropriate Omani authorities.
