It is a great honour and privilege to welcome you all to the celebration of the 11th Ayurveda Day organized in association with Sri Sri Well being.
Today, we are not simply commemorating an ancient system of medicine. We are recognizing a living tradition that continues to offer meaningful perspectives to one of the most important questions of our time: how can we live healthier, more balanced and more fulfilling lives?
For thousands of years, Ayurveda has understood health as more than the absence of disease. It is about harmony between the body and mind, our lifestyle and our surroundings, and human beings and nature. In a world increasingly affected by stress, sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy dietary patterns and lifestyle-related conditions, this holistic perspective has renewed relevance.
Conditions such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular problems, sleep disorders and stress-related concerns remind us that healthcare must go beyond treating illness after it occurs. We must also strengthen prevention, healthy routines, mental wellbeing and responsible living.
This is where Ayurveda offers an important perspective. Its emphasis on balanced nutrition, physical activity, rest, mental wellbeing and disciplined daily practices encourages us to look at the individual as a whole: mind, body and environment. Ayurveda is not simply about treating a particular condition; it is about cultivating the conditions for healthier living.
The theme of this year’s Ayurveda Day, “Ayurveda for a Healthier Tomorrow,” is therefore both timely and universal.
It is reflected in the three important sub-themes of this year’s observance.
The first is Integrative Healthcare for Better Health Outcomes. The future of healthcare lies in bringing together the strengths of different systems, where appropriate, so that patients and communities can benefit from a more comprehensive approach to wellbeing.
As Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has said, “Ayurveda could rightly be described as a holistic human science.” This holistic understanding encourages us to consider physical, mental, social and environmental wellbeing together.
The second sub-theme is Evidence, Research and Innovation in Ayurveda. The knowledge and experience of Ayurveda must continue to be strengthened through scientific research, documentation, innovation and responsible practice. Tradition and modernity need not be seen as opposites. They can complement one another through evidence and knowledge exchange.
As Prime Minister Modi has observed, India has witnessed “the amalgamation of knowledge of Ayurveda with modern medicine.”
The third sub-theme is Ayurveda for Community Wellbeing and Sustainable Living. Health is not only an individual responsibility; it is also a community concern. Healthier food choices, active lifestyles, mental wellbeing, awareness and harmony with our natural environment can contribute to healthier and more resilient communities.
There is perhaps no more appropriate place to advance this vision than the Sultanate of Oman.
Oman has a rich heritage of traditional knowledge associated with medicinal and aromatic plants. Across the Sultanate, plants such as frankincense, myrrh, sidr, aloe vera, and various aromatic herbs have traditionally been valued for their health, wellness and therapeutic properties.
The recently signed India–Oman Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, or CEPA, also opens new avenues for cooperation in areas connected with healthcare, pharmaceuticals and traditional medicine. For Ayurveda and traditional medicine in particular, it provides opportunities for greater professional exchange, cooperation, research, capacity building and the exchange of knowledge and expertise.
I am confident that the relevant stakeholders on both sides will make constructive use of the opportunities created by CEPA to further promote traditional medicine and Ayurveda in Oman, while strengthening cooperation between our two countries in the wider healthcare and wellness sector.
On this special occasion, I would like to express my deepest appreciation to His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, whose vision and leadership continue to strengthen the enduring friendship between India and Oman.
The convergence of India’s Ayurvedic heritage with Oman’s rich botanical and traditional knowledge presents an important avenue for cooperation—not only in traditional medicine, but also in research, cultivation, conservation, education and sustainable wellness.
I also extend my sincere gratitude to Sri Sri Wellbeing for supporting this celebration as a sponsor, and to all the practitioners, and participants who are actively contributing to the promotion and propagation of Ayurveda in Oman.
May Ayurveda continue to connect the wisdom of the past with the possibilities of the future, and may the friendship between India and Oman continue to flourish.
Thank you very much.
Shukran.
