Press Release Celebration of International Day of Yoga 2016 in Oman

The United Nations General Assembly had declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga on December 11, 2014 through the Resolution 69/131. The Declaration came after the call for the adoption of June 21 as International Day of Yoga by Prime Minister of India, Mr Narendra Modi, during his address to UN General Assembly in September, 2014. Para 2 of the Resolution “Invites all Members and Observer States, the Organizations of the United Nations System and other international and regional organizations, as well as civil society, including non-governmental organizations and individuals, to observe the International Day of Yoga, in an appropriate manner and in accordance with national priorities, in order to raise awareness of the benefits of practicing yoga,”. The first International Day of Yoga was celebrated on 21st June 2015 in more than 192 countries across the world with great enthusiasm by millions of persons.

2. Last year, Embassy of India in Muscat had celebrated the 1st International Day of Yoga on 21 June, 2015 with the theme ‘Yoga for Healthy Oman’ wherein hundreds of Omani and Indian Yoga enthusiasts, practitioners, beginners had participated. The Event was a great success in disseminating the benefits of Yoga amongst Omani, people and expatriates.

3. Encouraged by successful celebrations in 2015, various Yoga organisations and institutions in Oman have joined hands with Indian Embassy in Muscat to celebrate the 2nd International Day of Yoga in Oman on 21st June 2016. Thousands of participants, including dignitaries, Ambassadors, diplomats and members of Indian community in Oman are expected to join the 2nd International Yoga Day celebrations. The Yoga Session will follow a Common Yoga Protocol, which will be practiced under the guidance of qualified instructors. Common Yoga Protocol is designed in a manner that participants need not have prior knowledge of Yoga. Since the above Yoga session is aimed at spreading awareness of the benefits of Yoga participation is free. A yoga mat and a especially designed T-shirt will be provided.

4. The Embassy of India is pleased to invite all yoga enthusiasts in Oman along with members of their families (children above the age of 11 years) for the Yoga Session which will be held at the Oman International Exhibition Centre in Muscat on 21 June, 2016. There will be a separate section for the ladies and children. The doors will open at 7.30 p.m. and the Yoga Session will start at 8.00 pm and may last for an hour.
