Indian Embassy Requests Indians in Omanto Enroll as Overseas Voters

In view of the increasing interest amongst the Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in Oman to participate in political process in India, the Embassy of India, would like to encourage NRIs in Oman to enroll as NRI voters to become a part of the election process in India.

In this regard, the Embassy of India would like to draw the attention of NRIs residing and working in Oman that, under Section 20A of the Representation of People Act, 1950, and rules made thereunder, every citizen of India-(a) whose name is not included in the electoral roll; (b) who has not acquired the citizenship of any other country; and (c) who is absenting from his place of ordinary residence in India, owing to his employment, education or otherwise outside India, is entitled to have his/her name registered in the electoral roll as Overseas electors” in the constituency in one’s place of residence in India as mentioned in one’s passport.

The application for this purpose can be filed in prescribed form in person before the concerned Electoral Registration Officer or sent by post. It can also be filed online on website of Chief Electoral Officer of the concerned State or website of Election Commission of India (eci.nic.in). After getting enrolled in the electoral roll, NRIs can cast their vote in India during Assembly or Parliamentary elections at the respective polling station after showing his/her valid Indian passport.

NRI’s residing and working in Oman are,therefore,encouragedto get their names registered on the electoral rolls as NRI voters,in case they have not already done so, to enable them to become a part of the political process in India.
