Tanushree Shankar dance troupe visits Oman to celebrate India[at]70

Indian Embassy in Muscat has been organising a series of cultural, economic and community events as part of celebration of 70 years of India’s Independence, including, dance and music performances, essay and quiz competitions, exhibition of paintings, seminars and workshops with a view to highlight the journey of India as a nation since it independence in 1947.

2.      After the visit of the Kathak Dance troupe, led by Dinesh Poddar, in August 2017, which gave enthralling performances in Muscat, Sohar, Nizwa and Salalah, Oman will be treated with scintillating Indian contemporary dance performances by the dance troupe led by Guru Tanushree Shankar. Both the Groups have been sponsored by Indian Ministry of Culture to visit Oman to celebrate India [at]70.

3.       The Indian contemporary dance troupe, led by Guru Tanushree Shankar, will be visiting Oman from 08-15 November 2017. The Group will perform at the Indian Embassy Lawns on 09 November 2017.  It will also give performances at Crowne Plaza Hotel, Sohar, on 10 November, 2017; Sur Royal Hall, Sur, on 12 November 2017; and at Indian Social Club in Salalah on 14 November, 2017.

4.       Dancer and choreographer, Guru Tanushree Shankar, is the Artistic Director of Tanushree Shankar Dance Troupe in Kolkata. Based on the creative style, pioneered by India’s legendary dancer Uday Shankar, Tanushree has developed a unique style of choreography, which is both creative and contemporary. The dances, to be performed by her troupe, based on ‘Uday Shankar’s Style of Dance’, are set to the vibrant music of visionary artiste Ananda Shankar and others and are presented in a theatrical manner appreciated by the audiences worldwide. The dances, a perfect blend of the rich Indian Kathak traditions and the more open outlook of the West, are Indian in spirit, modern in presentation and universal in appeal.

5.       The members of Tanushree Shankar Dance Troupe are accomplished dancers having performed both in India and abroad in more than 40 countries. They have performed in many prestigious festivals, including Middfest International in U.S.A., the Womad Festival in U.K. & Canary Islands, the Edinburgh International Fringe Festival in U.K, ‘Opening Ceremony’ of India Festival in Russia, Maximum India Festival in USA & Canada, NABC in San Francisco, Canada, San Jose, USA.

6.       The Group will be presenting Amity, which depicts human journey and vast experiences gained during the journey called life, including the spirit of humanity; Fishermen’s Dance, depicting the joy and happiness that the fisher folk find in their daily work; Wrishya Vihar, a story of unity of deer when confronted with existential threat posed by hunters; Pahari, a folk dance depicting the joy and happiness of the people living in hills; Mann Mayuri, expressing the love that the majestic peacock shares with the rains; Pratiksha, signifying the longing, a desire that exists at various levels in every human’s life; Maitree, a tribute to women, highlights their innate goodness, strength, character and their bonding together; Surrender, which is a ballet dance based on Sufi poet Jelaluddin Rumi’s poem, Human Being; and Reincarnation, which depicts the pace at which life moves and completes the full circle from childhood to old age.
