Indian Diaspora in Muscat celebrates 550th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji


A grand event was organized by Embassy of India, in collaboration with Gurudwara Management Committee, Muscat and Punjabi Wing of Indian Social Club (ISC) to commemorate the 550th Birth Anniversary of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji on 9 November 2019. Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was the founder of Sikh religion and was the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. Guru Nanak traveled far and wide, teaching people the message of one God and emphasized on universal brotherhood, love, humility, simplicity, equality and tolerance. The 550th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak, is being celebrated with great devotion and fervor since 23rd November 2018 by the Government and people of India all across the World.

The event started off with a Quiz competition on Guru Nanak, where students from various Indian schools in Oman participated. The Ambassador of India to the Sultanate of Oman, H.E. MunuMahawar welcomed the guests and delivered a short speech and talked about the life and contribution of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Ambassador also spoke about various measures taken by Government of India to commemorate the 550th Birth Anniversary of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, including development of SultanpurLodhi as a heritage town; issue of commemorative coins & postage stamps; proposals to establish chairs on Guru Nanak Dev ji in foreign universities; publishing of writings of Guru Nanak Dev ji in different languages of World in association with UNESCO; and LED projection of Guru Nanak on iconic buildings around the world. Two videos - one on teachings of Guru Nanak and other on the inauguration of Kartarpur Corridor, which connects two important Sikh shrines related to the life of Guru Nanak (Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur, Pakistan and Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Gurdaspur, India) were screened during the event, which were well appreciated by the audience.

Convenor of ISC - Punjabi Wing also spoke about Guru Nanak and informed the audience of celebrations that will be organized in Gurudwara in Muscat from 12-15 November. Ms. Bhavjot Kaur, Class 7 student of Indian School Al Wadi Al Kabir delivered a speech on the life and message of Guru Nanak. It was followed by a short performance of Shabadh (religious songs) by members of Gurudwara Management Committee, Muscat. The winners of the quiz competition were awarded by Ambassador and other dignitaries towards the end of the program. The event saw participation of more than 200 members of Indian community, who paid rich tributes to Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
